The Baxi Ecogen Boiler has been introduced as an innovative alternative to a conventional boiler, saving you more money in the long run, and decreasing your carbon footprint as well.
Combined heat and power (CHP) is a process whereby electrical power and heat is generated from a single source. The Baxi Ecogen unit is said to be more than 90% energy efficient as it generates electricity for your home while providing all your heating and hot water needs.
The benefits of the Ecogen boiler
- The boiler is more than 90% energy efficient, saving on money and carbon emissions, while generating electricity locally.
- Cuts the costs of fuel by off-setting electrical consumption.
- Potential to make extra money by selling your unused electricity to the national grid.
- Similar in design and function to a regular gas boiler.
- Virtually no distracting noise or vibrations.
How does it work?
The Baxi Ecogen unit is a condensing boiler that will meet all your heating and hot water needs. The unit uses a Free Piston Sterling Engine and generates 1kW of electricity per hour. This electricity can then be used throughout your home, providing up to 24kW of thermal energy for heating and hot water.
The unit works by responding to an initial heat demand of 6 kW. This ignites the heat source for the Free Piston Sterling Engine. The heat and electricity is generated by driving a magnetic piston up and down within a generator coil.
If your home demands more heat than 6kW, a supplementary burner offers an additional 18kW of heat. If however, the heat demands are lower than 6kW, the boiler modulates down to 3kW while still generating electricity.
The Ecogen boiler will be available from Baxi to UK residents from spring 2010. Visit www.baxi.co.uk for more information.
