Small living spaces present particular problems that larger ones do not: it’s a bit of a challenge to decorate such spaces. Very often furniture and home decor pieces are too big and conspire to make the room or living area appear smaller than what it really is.
It is possible to live in a small house or apartment and to do so in style. All it takes is a little bit of ingenuity and knowledge.
Here are a couple of home decor tips that should really jazz up your living space.
- Make space for your most treasured books by adding shelf space wherever possible. This needn’t be in the places you’d normally expect there to be books, either – why not put a shelf in the bathroom or guest toilet? Decorate it with some interesting things you picked up on your recent travels and it’ll instantly become a hit with your guests.
- You want to keep things as light and airy as you can. Dark rooms will only make the place appear smaller than what it really is. Try to add additional light fixtures if you can and go for light colours. Neutral colours would be a fantastic start as they can serve as a base from which to work.
- People who live in smaller than average properties should use space to their advantage. Try to find something that can multi-task. Why not use an attractive chest as storage space and have it double up as a coffee table? Or you could use an ottoman or something similar for the same purpose.
- Put low bookcases along a sofa back: they’ll double as a sofa table.
- Small spaces need visual continuity so you may find it’s best to ensure that the flooring is the same throughout the room or apartment.
- Why take up even more valuable real estate with side tables when you can mount small shelves on either side of your bed?
- Go small with your furniture. Do not be tempted to buy the corner lounge if you know it’ll dwarf your living room. Rather go for something that would fit in better with the available size.
- It may be better to keep your house or apartment’s window treatments as simple as possible.
- Run a low bookcase underneath windows.
- Raise your expectations by propping your bed up on something sturdy. This will allow you to store items underneath and it will also give your bedroom a novel look.
